What is Shodashvarga?

Shodashvarga refers to the 16 divisional charts (Vargas) in Vedic astrology. While the Rasi chart provides the overall picture, each divisional chart zooms into a specific life domain. 'Shodash' means sixteen and 'Varga' means division.

Key charts include Navamsa (D9) for marriage, Dasamsa (D10) for career, Dwadasamsa (D12) for parents, and Trimsamsa (D30) for misfortunes. A planet's placement across divisions determines its Vimshopaka Bala (20-point strength).

How Do Divisional Charts Work?

Each chart divides the 30-degree sign into smaller segments. Navamsa divides into 9 parts of 3.33 degrees, Dasamsa into 10 parts of 3 degrees. A planet's exact degree determines its divisional chart sign placement.

Strength is judged across multiple divisions — a planet in own/exalted signs in many divisions is very strong (high Vimshopaka). Debilitation across divisions reduces ability to deliver positive results.

Key Divisional Charts

Navamsa (D9)

The most important divisional chart for marriage, soul purpose, and inner nature. Every astrologer checks D9 before making predictions.

Dasamsa (D10)

Career and professional chart. Planets strong in D10 indicate success in their professional domains.

Hora (D2)

Wealth chart dividing signs into Solar and Lunar halves. Sun's hora indicates wealth through effort; Moon's hora through public service.

Drekkana (D3)

Chart of siblings and courage, dividing each sign into three parts. Used for analyzing co-born and personal courage.

Saptamsa (D7)

Chart of children and progeny. Essential for fertility predictions and children's well-being analysis.

Vimshopaka Bala

A 20-point strength score from placements across all 16 divisions. Above 15 is exceptional; below 5 suggests weakness.
