Chandra Bala

Chandra Bala (Moon Strength) is a personalized Vedic astrology system that evaluates the auspiciousness of a given day based on the transit Moon's position relative to your natal Moon sign. Since the Moon governs the mind, emotions, and receptivity, its strength on any given day directly influences how well activities initiated that day will succeed.

The system works by counting the sign (Rasi) the transit Moon occupies from your birth Moon sign. Each of the 12 possible positions (houses) has a specific quality — some are highly favorable (like the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, and 11th houses), some are neutral (2nd and 5th), and some are unfavorable (4th, 8th, 9th, and 12th). This makes Chandra Bala deeply personalized — the same day can be excellent for one person and challenging for another.

Chandra Bala is one of the two key personalized timing factors in Muhurat selection, alongside Tara Bala. While Tara Bala evaluates at the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) level, Chandra Bala evaluates at the Rasi (sign) level. To calculate Chandra Bala, determine the sign the transit Moon currently occupies and count from your natal Moon sign. If your natal Moon is in Aries and the transit Moon is in Gemini, the transit Moon is in the 3rd house from your natal Moon (Aries=1, Taurus=2, Gemini=3). This house number determines the day's quality for you personally.

The Moon changes signs approximately every 2.5 days, so your Chandra Bala changes every few days. Houses 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, and 11 are favorable (strong Moon); houses 2 and 5 are neutral (moderate Moon); houses 4, 8, 9, and 12 are unfavorable (weak Moon). Each house also has specific activity recommendations — for example, the 7th house is particularly good for partnerships and agreements.

Chandra Bala is a fundamental concept in Muhurat Shastra (electional astrology) documented in classical texts including Muhurat Chintamani, Kalaprakashika, and Dharmasindhu. The principle that the Moon's transit position relative to the natal Moon determines daily favorability is one of the oldest personalized timing concepts in Jyotish.
