Chara Dasha is a sign-based planetary period system from the Jaimini tradition of Vedic astrology. Unlike Vimshottari which assigns periods to planets, Chara Dasha assigns periods to zodiac signs (Rasis). Each sign's period duration is determined by the position of its lord — the further the lord is from the sign, the longer the period.
This system is particularly valued for career and public-life predictions. Because it works with signs rather than individual planets, it emphasizes environmental and situational changes — shifts in location, social circles, career fields, and life circumstances that unfold sign by sign.
How Does Chara Dasha Work?
The starting sign is determined by the Ascendant. Period lengths for each sign are calculated based on the distance between the sign and its Jaimini lord (using the Jaimini concept of variable sign lordship with Rahu and Ketu). Periods range from 1 to 12 years per sign.
During a sign's Dasha, the planets placed in that sign and the sign's lord become prominent. Events relate to the house that sign represents from the Ascendant. The Karakamsha (Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign) plays a special role in Jaimini interpretation.
Key Concepts
Periods are assigned to zodiac signs rather than planets. Each sign's period activates the houses and planets associated with that sign in your chart.
Unlike fixed-length Vimshottari periods, Chara Dasha periods vary from 1-12 years based on the sign lord's distance from its own sign.
Jaimini uses variable significators (Chara Karakas) based on degree. The planet with the highest degree becomes Atmakaraka (soul significator), providing unique insights.
Chara Dasha excels at predicting career changes, relocations, and public-life shifts because sign-based periods reflect environmental rather than personal planetary changes.

Historical Origins
Chara Dasha is attributed to Sage Jaimini and is described in the Jaimini Sutras, one of the most important supplementary texts to the Parashari system. The Jaimini tradition offers a complete parallel framework for Vedic astrology with unique concepts like Chara Karakas, Pada systems, and sign-based Dashas that complement and enrich the more widely practiced Parashari methods.
