What is Ashtakavarga?

Ashtakavarga is a Vedic astrology point-based system from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) that evaluates the benefic strength of each zodiac sign. Seven planets (Sun through Saturn) each receive benefic points (bindus) from seven planets plus the Ascendant, creating individual charts called Bhinnashtakavarga.

When all seven individual charts are combined, the result is the Sarvashtakavarga — a composite view showing which signs (and therefore which houses in your chart) have the most benefic support. Signs with 28+ bindus are strong; those below 25 may face challenges.

How is Ashtakavarga Calculated?

For each of the 7 planets, BPHS defines specific house positions from each contributing planet (and Lagna) that grant a benefic point. For example, when calculating Sun's Ashtakavarga, if Mars is positioned in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11 from Sun, Mars contributes 1 bindu.

Each planet can receive 0-8 bindus per sign (from 7 planets + Lagna). The Sarvashtakavarga sums all 7 planets' bindus per sign, giving a total typically around 337 across all 12 signs. Higher totals indicate stronger overall chart strength.

Key Concepts in Ashtakavarga

Bhinnashtakavarga

Individual Ashtakavarga chart for each planet showing where it receives benefic support. Each planet has its own unique pattern of 0-8 bindus across the 12 signs.

Sarvashtakavarga (SAV)

The combined totals from all 7 planets. SAV reveals which houses in your chart have the most collective planetary support — key for timing events and transit analysis.

Bindus (Points)

A bindu (dot/point) represents a benefic contribution from one planet or Lagna. Each planet gets 0 or 1 bindu per sign from each of 8 contributors, based on BPHS rules.

Transit Strength

When a planet transits a sign with high bindus in its own Ashtakavarga, it delivers favorable results. Low-bindu signs during transit indicate caution. SAV is essential for transit timing.

Threshold Analysis

In Sarvashtakavarga, signs with 25+ bindus are considered strong. The overall chart total (typically ~337) indicates general benefic strength. Charts above 350 are excellent.

Historical Origins

The Ashtakavarga system originates from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Chapter 66, attributed to Sage Parashara. It represents one of the most mathematically precise tools in Vedic astrology, converting complex planetary relationships into a quantitative scoring system.

Classical texts like Shambu Hora Prakasha and Jataka Parijata further elaborated on Ashtakavarga applications. Modern software enables instant computation of these traditionally time-consuming calculations, making this powerful tool accessible to all practitioners.
