Independence Day
When it falls
The date shifts because it tracks the moon, not the Gregorian calendar.
Calculated for India (IST) using precise Panchang astronomy. Dates can shift by a day at locations far to the east or west.
What Independence Day commemorates
Independence Day marks the end of nearly two centuries of British colonial rule in India. At midnight on 15 August 1947, India became a free and sovereign nation, a moment formalised as power was transferred from the British Crown to Indian hands. It is a national holiday observed across the entire country.
The freedom that the day celebrates was won through a long and broad-based movement spanning generations. It drew in figures and ordinary citizens of every background, through campaigns of non-violent civil disobedience as well as other forms of resistance. The day honours the sacrifices made over that struggle and the leaders who guided it.
Independence Day is also a moment of national reflection. Alongside celebration, it is an occasion to remember the human cost of that period, to recall the values on which the new nation was founded, and to look at how far the country has come since 1947.
Rituals & observance
Independence Day is observed with public ceremonies and quieter community and family events. The most common ways it is marked include:
- A national address and flag hoisting at the Red Fort in Delhi, where the Prime Minister raises the national flag and speaks to the country, an event broadcast live nationwide.
- Flag hoisting ceremonies in schools, colleges, government offices, and residential communities, usually followed by the national anthem.
- Cultural programmes, parades, and patriotic songs performed by students and community groups.
- Distribution of sweets and small gatherings among families, neighbours, and colleagues.
- Displaying the national flag at homes, vehicles, and public buildings, following the official flag code.
- Television and radio broadcasts of the main ceremonies, documentaries, and films on the freedom movement.
